Kegiatan ini pertama kali digagas dan dikembangkan oleh kelompok pelaksana Thames Festival di London (The Mayor’s Thames Festival) yang bekerja sama dengan British Council untuk penerapannya di negara-negara lain. Kegiatan Rivers of the World telah berhasil menghubungkan lebih dari 2.000 sekolah di seluruh dunia setiap tahunnya. Di Indonesia, sejak tahun 2012, 6 sekolah menengah di Solo berkesempatan untuk menjadi peserta kegiatan. Selama kegiatan, 120 siswa ke-6 sekolah Solo dibimbing oleh praktisi seni berpengalaman untuk menghasilkan sebuah karya seni sesuai dengan temanya masing-masing.
